The origami paper balloon with black and white leaves on the outside, same size and shape, and multi-colored leaves inside, some big but some really tiny too. Inspiration: younger days and my old zine extra Xerox copies in the garage and couldn't find the master, so lazy. Redo later this week.
Still working after 6 years and being in a plastic storage bin.
So I'm firing up the boilers, May 27, 2026. Back then they were 1 lumen and 1 dollar; now they're 2 lumens and $1.50. I don't know exactly, but they'll be placed in random, less-travelled spots but easy to reach...with a little rolled up fun and positive hand written message/drawing in the stem like a message in a bottle. Give me an excuse to get out and look for some free meteorites.
CDs and a propane torch to make them droop. The origami paper balloon will not fit. So, a thermal paper camera picture of the location with maybe some colored pencil touches.
I should have experimented more with the heating and bending the disks. Easy to do with leather gloves. I had these sticker gems that contributed to uneven heating, causing strange texturing on some of the disks. I bought glow-in-the-dark translucent bees and ladybugs off Amazon, and I like the results, so I ordered some more, a bigger variety pack of 300: bunnies, frogs, butterflies, etc. A glue gun with an extension cord was so nice to be outside. And I got a small glass pane and plan to color the backside of the thermal paper camera prints and put them in the stems. It's striking to see. So that's it, going to place them in random places this summer. Keep me busy, and maybe I'll find a free meteorite.
Whatever happened to that matchbook with her phone number? Anyway.
As I was removing the matches they come in two halves, 10 matches each. So I dipped the 10 matches in glow in the dark paint and painted the friction strip too with glow in the dark paint. The rest is self-explanatory, paper puncher and some randomly chopped-up magazines and books for the pages of the matchbooks, 15 in total: supermarket ad, harbor freight ad, recipe book from 1999, craft book, atlas, dictionary, crossword puzzle book, home repair book, Grand Canyon, Zion, Lake Mead souvenir book, national geo from 1992; 2025 calendar, gardening book, etc. But they can be any theme, or subject, like a place, person, or activity, and either bee fiction or nonfiction.
I found spray paint better than acrylic, the acrylic is too plasticity. Maybe if they cure for longer. I peeled the backing off the jigsaws to make them thinner. Of course, painted them reactive to black light. They are cheap blank matchbooks, 50 for 5$, poor quality paper stock and there are better ones but not many sellers and I did not do much research, just trying out a concept but they worked none the less. . .
Equipment: stapler; scissors, guillotine paper cutter, paper puncher, etc. . . mod pog, glitter, imagination.
